2012 - 2022

International Building Exhibitions (IBA) in Germany develop pioneering solutions for demanding challenges in urban planning. Under the motto »knowledge-based urbanism« IBA Heidelberg implements architectural and urbanistic projects  for the knowledge society of the future.

IBA-Process

2008

Preparation

A scientific advisory board of the city administration examines whether an International Building Exhibition is the right format to address Heidelberg's complex urban planning matters.

2011

Municipal Council Resolution

The municipal council decides to launch an International Building Exhibition for Heidelberg.

2012

Update

The city of Heidelberg celebrates a kick-off party for IBA. Prof. Michael Braum is appointed Managing Director.

2013

Call for Projects

The IBA office starts work in March. The project phase begins in October. Citizens and institutions are invited to submit ideas for the knowledge city of the future.

2014

First Candidates

From the various ideas that were submitted, the IBA Board of Trustees selects the first promising concepts. Qualification work begins.

2015

First Projects

The Supervisory Board nominates four candidates as IBA projects.

2016

First Demonstration Space

Upon decision of the municipal council, IBA starts a planning phase zero for the former military base Patrick-Henry-Village.

2017

PHVision

IBA presents a development vision for Patrick-Henry-Village.

2018

Interim Presentation

In the 2018 midterm presentation, IBA exhibits the progress of its projects.

2019

Qualification

With 18 projects and candidates from five topical areas, IBA is working towards make a strong contribution to the city in the knowledge based society.

2022

Final Presentation

In 2022, IBA will show its final exhibition: For the presentation, the building projects will be on display throughout the city.

2023

Continuation

Once IBA has come to an end, new process qualities and an increase in building and planning culture should be sustained.
